~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ All our pure Longhaired Whippets are either direct offspring which descended from original Windsprite foundation stock (puppies that resulted when we bred two Windsprite dogs together), which we personally obtained from Walter Wheeler, or were bred by him, with the exception of Suzy, who was bred by Cindy Parme, and is the daughter of two Windsprite LHW. The other source for "pure" Longhaired Whippets is the breeding of Windsprite dogs with totally unrelated AKC Whippets. This inclusion of unrelated AKC Whippet bloodlines was approved and condoned by Walter Wheeler, and Claybrook has handwritten letters from him to us, in our possession, recommending that we do such. These breedings create what we call, "Smooth/longhair recessive Whippets", which, when bred back to LHW, produce litters of puppies in which statistically half of the puppies will be longhaired, and the other half will be smooth/longhair recessives. These resulting longhaired puppies are considered "pure" LHW. The reason for bringing in totally unrelated AKC Whippets is because the Windsprite gene pool is very limited, and after many years of not introducing any outside blood, is very tightly inbred. In order to reduce the possibility of inbreeding depression, and it's resulting genetic health problems, talked about on other pages on this web site, Claybrook decided back in the mid-1990's that it was necessary to start to introduce totally unrelated Whippet lines, to broaden the genetic base for the LHW. To that end we have worked to utilize the best resulting offspring from such Whippet outcrosses and to include them in the LHW gene pool.
