Galgo Español

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Characteristics
    The Galgo Español has retained the characteristics that make him suitable for running long distances over rugged terrain.  Compared to the Greyhound, the Galgo is a very long, fine dog with less depth of chest, less rear angulation, less weight and height, and longer muscling for endurance, rather than the rounded muscle for short bursts of intense speed, as in the Greyhound.   He has a long back, long tail, long head and hare feet, which are better on uneven ground.
    The coat comes in both smooth and wire haired,  and may be a wide range of colors:  brindle, black, cream, red and other colors (often with white markings).  The first two colors are preferred by the Spanish.  The height for males is 62 cm to 70 cm (about 24 1/2” to 27 1/2”), and for females is 60 cm to 68 cm (about 23 1/2” to 26 1/2”), with 2 cm over the maximum allowed if the dog is properly proportioned.
    The temperament of the Galgo Español is appealing.  He has a serious temperament, and on occasion is reserved.  He is quiet in the house and is very affectionate with his family, and gets along well with other dogs.  However, he may be somewhat shy with strangers.  He should be well socialized to help to prevent this.  When hunting, he is very energetic and lively.
    Good health in the Galgo has been  ensured by the Spanish over the years by natural selection, as until the 1970’s Galgos were used almost exclusively for the hunting of hare.  We have Spain to thank for creating a truly sturdy breed.  The Galgo Español has a remarkable legacy of healthy dogs.
